Belvidere—City
of
Located
in north central Illinois, 75 miles from downtown Chicago on Routes
20, 76 and US 90. It is
an industrial town surrounded by farms (81% of the land). The
population is about of 40,000, and is
growing daily with 50% of home sales to families from out of
area.
Electric is
supplied by ComEd.
The water department is owned and operated by the City.
There are 25 churches.
Two community newspapers
serve the area.
Recreation
includes the YMCA and the Park
District, which provides tennis, baseball, bowling, golf,
basketball, and a swimming pool.
Education
includes 9 grade schools (6 public, 3 private), 2 middle schools
(one public/one private), and one senior high school.
The
City boasts a public library with a summer reading program, computer
access, video/cassettes, tapes, large print books, etc.

Medical
services are provided
by one hospital, with 3 major hospitals only 12 miles away.
This area is
well connected to the region via road, air and rail -- US 90 and 20
and state hwy 76 and 173 and is served by 26 major truck lines—8
locally owned. Freight
rail
service runs
with the Union Pacific. No
passenger service exists as of yet, but officials are working with
Metra (the Chicago Metro commuter rail service) to bring passenger
service to the area.
The Poplar
Grove Airport is a
local airport serving the surround
communities. Rockford
International Airport and Chicago O'Hare Airport also serve this area with national and
international passenger service.
